Yvonne Mentor travelled to Zambia to visit a friend, and fell in love. For the past year she has devoted her time to supporting women in netball, and people with special needs in Zambia.
As one of the poorest countries in the world, 70% of people in Zambia live below the poverty line. Most people are rural based, and there is so little money for infrastructure or many of the things we take for granted.
Although African life is different, the people are so warm and generous. Yvonne started gathering some of the ladies in Kafue, to play a little netball after work in the evening and now works tirelessly to raise its profile and get more ladies playing, coaching and umpiring. Netball is the #1 sport played by women and girls in Zambia.
Yvonne commented "Having come from a background where for the past 15 years I’ve watched the development of Geva from school, to town, to county, to regional and finally into an international netballer. We take for granted that there will always be facilities and coaching available, and talented athletes in the UK will have an opportunity to be nurtured and developed into whatever they want to achieve."
Taking place over the second weekend of December, Tobago International Rugby 7s Tournament proudly welcomed Esher Golden Lions to it's Golden Shores.
Following success in the groups stages with wins against Invictus (Trinidad side) and New York City (USA Northern Olympic development team) who recently played in World Club Champs at Twickenham, Esher pulled out a further convincing 31-5 win in the semi-finals against USA invitational side, Atlantis, who many viewed to be tournament favourites.
Facing the same New York team in the Final, Esher went out hard scoring 12 unanswered points in the first 4 minutes. Unfortunately New York pulled back 7 points with the last play of the half and momentum began to shift.
The second half was always going to be a tougher, against the breeze and a slight hill. New York scored 2 more quick converted tries which took the wind out of the Golden Lions. New York City had a red card, but it was just too late for Esher. It was a spirited performance and although the boys lost, they could hold their heads up high.
Final score: 21-12 to New York City.
